Sri Lanka: More tea and coconut oil instead of oil palms
Sri Lanka to become free of oil palm plantations
The aim of the order is to make Sri Lanka free of oil palm plantations and palm oil consumption. This is, of course, good news for environmentalists and tea growers. Palm oil production has led to widespread deforestation and damage to ecosystems on the Green Island.
According to estimates from traders, Sri Lanka imports around 200,000 tonnes of palm oil each year, mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia. Since the palm was introduced to Sri Lanka, it has spread across more than 1,000 areas of the country.
