Mevlana Tea
How did Sri Lanka transition from coffee to Ceylon black tea?
Unique processing method for Ceylon black tea
This unique processing method is responsible for the bolder and more aromatic flavor of black tea. The way Ceylon black tea is packaged is another reason why its flavor lasts longer, making it an excellent product for export around the world.
There are various varieties of black tea. The main difference lies in the locations or regions where the tea plants are grown. A variety of tea that comes from a specific region will have slight characteristic differences from another variety grown in a different region. For this reason, black tea varieties are often named after the region where they are grown, making them easier to identify.
The most famous variety of black tea is undoubtedly Ceylon black tea, which is grown on the island of the same name in Sri Lanka, where the extreme climate and the rugged nature of the landscape play an important role in its characteristic flavor.
Leaf rust prepared the end of coffee on the island
Before Ceylon was ever a tea-growing region, it was first a coffee region. Coffee cultivation in Sri Lanka began around 1800, about three centuries after the Portuguese first landed in search of spices. In 1837, Sri Lanka alone on the island of Ceylon recorded a gigantic coffee area, which stimulated the coffee trade and export to the then British colony.
However, almost forty years later, coffee cultivation in Sri Lanka suffered a major setback from which it would never recover. It was in early 1865 when coffee planters in Ceylon noticed a leaf rust that caused the leaves to die and the dreaded Hemileia vastatrix, or Devastating Emily, to fall. For a time, the islanders planted more quickly to overcome this problem. However, this brought no success, and they began to turn to tea.
A new chapter in tea cultivation
The first Ceylon black tea produced in the 1860s was literally rolled by hand or with the arm on the floors of bungalow verandas or on tables, and then fired over charcoal fires. The resulting Ceylon black tea was a fruity, full-bodied beverage with a slightly smoky flavor.Mevlana Tea: Unique flavor through dust-free production
